The works exhibited in Soggetti Smarriti ("Lost Subjects") are temporary amnesias, lapses of attention, visual disturbances. They are blackouts, gaps, lacerations, fading, interrupted or disjointed traces, scratches, voids, which act as can sometimes happen with concepts, words and names of which we have suddenly lost the memory.

Paolo Toffolutti's painting deals with these overshadowings, which do not have to do with the surface or the depth of things, but with their "infra-thin", with their being with us in proximity, and us with them in an environment that welcomes both. What is in front of us, standing between us and what we do, perceive, or try to understand... elements of disturbance, of distraction, of confusion. ... noise, communication theorists would say, what we have neglected in order to focus on something else.
