Over-Pinking is much more than just an exhibition. It began as a workshop, Arachne Nets, with the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the collaboration with Silke Geppert, a fashion design resear cher, professor, and curator. The common theme was - and still is - this pink velvet: 200 meters of recycled fabric. A textile that turned out to be 100% polyester, making it particularly difficult to work with.
Participants from four different painting classes, at both bachelor's and master's levels, were challenged to explore new modes of expression. Lessons and visits about textiles in art - their meaning and transformation throughout history - provided them with essential background knowledge. They also had to reflect on the deeper meaning of their artwork, while staying connected to their own identities - a crucial aspect of the process. And all of this had to be accomplished within a very short time frame.
Beyond their individual artistic work, they joined forces to organize the entire project - from the promotional material to the catalogue. They also collaborated with Prof. Carlo Tombola’s students from the N.T.A. (New Technologies of Art) department, who handled the images and layout.
Finally, they set up the exhibition in just three days of intense work.
